Every city has a centre point – a spot where residents get together for recreation and leisure. Across the world, parks have served in this role and acted as a point of socio-cultural gatherings in cities. Kozhikode too has one such picturesque spot right in the heart of the City – Mananchira Square. Visited by hundreds of people routinely, Mananchira Square is a hotspot for both local people and tourists alike, to spend some quality time in.
Mananchira Square is a beautiful park embellished with lawns where people gather. It has buildings constructed using traditional Kerala architecture and also a musical fountain that adds to the charm. The Kozhikode Public Library is located nearby. However, the most noted feature of the Square is a large pond known as Mananchira Tank around which the Park is built.
The tank used to be the bathing pool and was built by Zamorin Mana Vikrama around the 14th Century. It was later converted as a source of drinking water for Kozhikode. By the late 19th century, the pond was declared as preserved exclusively for drinking water purposes by the then municipal council of Kozhikode. Mananchira Square, as a park was opened in the year of 1994.
